When it comes to communications, we don't guess
In order to run a mission critical, 24/7 data center, a continuous uninterupted flow of data from the seismic stations is required. Missing a single data packet will often reset a filter or reset a detector and interrupt the workflow. It's imperative to design for a very high level of performance, often in challenging environments using narrow bandwidth links.
Our systems are designed to be 100% reliable and robust. One never knows when induced seismicity will occur, nor when passive events will happen, therefore monitoring systems must record everything. Communicating continuous data reliably is challenging, particularly in remote environments.
A good communications design allows stations to be readily placed in optimal positions to maximize network performance and reduce the number of stations required. Other providers may place stations near cell towers or power sources because it's the easiest way to design a communications system. This approach is fraught with problems as the data will be noisy and ultimately useless. Networks are often deployed in poor locations where background noise could impede performance because of a lack of communications design knowledge and inappropriate equipment.

Installing a real-time network in a hostile environment is challenging, even under ideal conditions, and is constantly being tested by a variety of factors, i.e. snow storms with compromised cellular coverage. We know how to deal with these types of challenges. Over the last 30 years, we've built a pedigree of obtaining mission critical data for seismic systems in extreme environments, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, the desserts of Saudi Arabia to the remote mountainous regions of the Himalayas. Nothing is a guess for us - every comunications link is modelled, tested and deployed. These systems must be 100% relaible, so by modelling communications links and understanding fade margins we are able to design robust links with power systems that guarantee data 24/7.
